I was the first non-family member to meet Lucretia Marie’s litter at the breeder’s home. I sat cross-legged on the floor and the breeder opened the enclosure. What looked like a herd of six-week-old puppies came rushing toward me. They climbed on my lap, licked my face and barked for attention. But one puppy positioned herself next to me and leaned into my side. “You, little one, I hope I can take you home.”
I was the first to visit the litter, but I had been the last to put down a deposit for a puppy. Others got to choose first. I waited and kept my fingers crossed, reminded myself that I would love whichever puppy I got. By some miracle, the puppy that came to live with me was exactly the one I needed in my life.
Lucretia Marie (Lucy to friends) has brought a calm elegance to my life, joy to my home. Sometimes on walks or when we are playing, she will sit down, back straight. Those lines won through generations of careful breeding remind me of when I first met the litter. I think of Lucy as my meditation timer at these moments and try to stand just as straight.
A year went by. When it came time to get Lucy spayed, I could not bring myself to do it. I called the breeder. “Look, I know I signed a contract that said I would get her fixed, but she has such a wonderful personality, such outstanding beauty. This is almost spiritual, I feel like her genes have to be repeated.”
The breeder surprised me with what she said next. She had been moving after Lucy’s litter and had not kept a puppy. She said she always regretted that and was happy to let Lucy’s line continue.
Lucy is the only fertile dam from that litter descended of champions. When her puppies came, they were calm that first night, little miracles of taking a chance, of hope.
As they have grown, they have delivered on their promise. Each has a distinct personality. We are confident that one of them will call to your heart.
